Hispanic Heritage month begins on 15 September, running through the 15th of October! It begins in the middle of the month to honor the independence declarations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, who all declared independence on 15 September 1821, followed by Mexico on the 16th and Chile on the 18th. It began as a week-long celebration under President Johnson in 1968 and was expanded to cover a 30-day period by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
The Latino population in the United States today is over 60 million people, making up 18.9% of the population. While the term Hispanic is used to connect to Spain or the Spanish language, The National Museum of the America Latino, describes Latino as “diverse residents of the United States with cultural or ancestral ties to Latin America or the Caribbean.”
Americans of Hispanic heritage have been critical to the financial sector of the United States, including Roman Acosta Banuelos, founder of Pan American National Bank and the 34th Treasurer of the United States; Jane Fraser CEO of Citigroup; Priscilla Almodovar CEO of FannieMae; and Adriana Kugler, member of the Federal Reserve Board.
